Honestly.
My life is generic and boring. I’d love to switch jobs constantly in the future, from being a pyrotechnician to a behind the stage concert worker! Haha. That would definitely give my parents a heart attack.
This sudden seemingly irrealistic impulse derived from reading ‘The Alchemist’. It was so so. Talked about following your ‘Personal Legend’ and to follow your dreams, stuff like that.
I’d like to be a modern day gypsy, travelling from one place to another. I think I’d be fine looking at the fact that I love doing stuff alone. Oooh, I want to work in a animal conservation too! Engineering might be the ‘right’ course for me and my logical personality, but, now when I think about it, I’m not really sure that I want to spend my days holed up in an office cubicle, clicking the mouse away. Physical work has always made me happy. I remember I did such a good job in Junior One while cleaning the instruments of the Chinese Orchestra Club that they made me 清洁股 the next year. Lol.
Laugh at my wild and ridiculous you may, I just might do it (when I’ve gathered up my guts). :p

Hahaha, I think physical work kinda keeps me feel useful too.. like mopping the floor, cleaning the toilet… but it of course also physically drained my energy away.. haha, just that i mentally feel a bit useful.. XD

Lol. I personally feel more useful physically. Ah well… We’ll see..

hey, i stumbled across your blog when i searched in which hall to stay. i’ll study at the HKU in fall term, and have no clue at which hall to stay? Maybe you could point a nice hall out for me. starr? Lee Shau Kee? Swire? Simon KY Lee?
I would be sooo gratefull, thx

Most international students would choose Starr Hall. St. John’s and Lee Shau Kee are the next two choices.
Starr is relatively new and nearer to campus as compared to St. John’s and LSK. All 3 of them have their own cultures. Starr, even though, relatively new has quite a good and strong hall culture. St. John’s has more traditional culture but some of my friends are enjoying it there too. I stay in LSK and think it’s milder compared to the two. Depends on what you want really.
Swire and SKY Lee are very traditional and they are on campus. So it’d be really convenient.
If you’d like to mingle more with the locals and stay up all night with the activities, I think Starr and St. John’s would be good choices. LSK is has a friendly environment and its not too hectic, which i personally like.
Are you coming for an exchange or full-time? Hope this was of help. Feel free to ask if you’ll like to know more.

Hey Ostry, thx for your comprehensive answer. I’m coming for one exchange semester, starting in Sept 09. Can’t wait already, I’m really thrilled :]
I just have a few questions:
How long does it take you to get to HKU from starr and LSK?
Is there a difference in transportation between starr and LSK? (getting to central) Starr is nearer to Central, but are there also more busses? Which is more convenient regarding transportation?
Is there a possibibility to get a single room @ LSK, or a room with another exchange student? I wouldn’t mind sharing a room with a local student, but i think I’ll ask

From Starr it’s just a ten minute walk, for LSK around 15 minutes. Most halls apart from the ones at Sassoon Road are really near campus.
Nope, there’s no difference in transportation bet. starr and LSK. Busses that pass thru LSK would definitely pass thru Starr. Starr is slightly more convenient as the stop is just right outside the hall whereas for LSK, you’d have to walk 3 minutes to the bus stop. You can get to Central easily from both halls.
I doubt you’d get a single room at LSK or with another exchange student coz they have this thing that you have to ‘contribute’ in order to be ‘qualified’ for a single room, if you get what i mean. So, you’d most prob be paired up with a local. If you do want a single room, then apply for St. John’s. All of the rooms are single rooms.

hi!
i found your site also searching about HKU halls. can i ask what would be a good hall choice for an international studying at HKU for their FULL undergrad degree? ill be there for 3 years, and i really want to experience hall culture. despite wat you said about starr, i hear of starr being the hall with no hall culture, like it has no unity. if what you say is true about starr, i would very much like to go(dorms seem the newest and nicest)! but in comparison to Lady Ho Tung Hall, what are the differences between Starr and LHT hall? i dont want to be in a hall where people will be pissed at my non-proficiency of cantonese, but i want good, almost harsh, hall culture. to be truly unified and devoted!
Thank you in advance!
